Contamination and Soil Biological Properties in the Serra Pelada Mine - Amazonia, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Teixeira,Renato Alves; Fernandes,Antonio Rodrigues; Ferreira,José Roberto; Vasconcelos,Steel Silva; Braz,Anderson Martins de Souza.
ABSTRACT Discovered in 1980 and unleashed an utter gold rush of the modern era, Serra Pelada was the largest open-air mine in Brazil. About 80,000 gold prospectors worked there until 1984, when the gold pits were flooded. The environmental impact caused by mining inflicted irreversible damage to the ecosystem, with the formation of a large lake and piles of waste rock and sterile overburden, still evident 28 years after the mine was closed. This study aimed to evaluate the available and pseudo total contents of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), the contamination and pollution levels, and to understand how the biological soil factors are related to the chemical properties of the soil and the available PTE contents in the Serra Pelada - Amazônia, Brazil....

Industrial and urban organic wastes increase soil microbial activity and biomass Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Boechat,Cácio Luiz; Santos,Jorge Antonio Gonzaga; Accioly,Adriana Maria de Aguiar; Bomfim,Marcela Rebouças; Santos,Adailton Conceição dos.
Microbial processes have been used as indicators of soil quality, due to the high sensitivity to small changes in management to evaluate, e.g., the impact of applying organic residues to the soil. In an experiment in a completely randomized factorial design 6 x 13 + 4, (pot without soil and residue or absolute control) the effect of following organic wastes was evaluated: pulp mill sludge, petrochemical complex sludge, municipal sewage sludge, dairy factory sewage sludge, waste from pulp industry and control (soil without organic waste) after 2, 4, 6, 12, 14, 20, 28, 36, 44, 60, 74, 86, and 98 days of incubation on some soil microbial properties, with four replications. The soil microbial activity was highly sensitive to the carbon/nitrogen ratio of the...

Microbial activity of soil with sulfentrazone associated with phytoremediator species and inoculation with a bacterial consortium Bragantia
Melo,Christiane Augusta Diniz; Souza,Wendel Magno de; Carvalho,Felipe Paolinelli de; Massenssini,André Marcos; Silva,Antonio Alberto da; Ferreira,Lino Roberto; Costa,Maurício Dutra.
ABSTRACT Phytostimulation plays a key role in the process of rhizodegradation of herbicides in soil. Additionally, bio-enhancement associated with phytoremediation may increase the efficiency of the decontamination process of soils with herbicides. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the biomass and microbial activity of soil contaminated with sulfentrazone and cultivated with phytoremediator species plus a bacterial consortium. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, carried out with a 2 × 4 × 4 completely randomized factorial design with 4 replications. The first factor consisted of the presence or absence of bio-enhancement with a bacterial consortium composed of Pseudomonas bacteria; the second factor consisted of a monoculture...

Petter,Fabiano André; Leite,Luiz Fernando Carvalho; Machado,Diogo Milhomem de; Marimon Júnior,Ben Hur de; Lima,Larissa Borges de; Freddi,Onã da Silva; Araújo,Ademir Sérgio Ferreira.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the short- and medium-term effect of biochar on soil microbial properties, organic carbon and nitrogen in an Oxisol from Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design consisting of five levels of biochar (0, 2, 4, 8 and 16 Mg∙ha–1) with and without of synthetic fertilizer: 0 and 200 kg.ha–1 of synthetic fertilizer N-P-K (00-20-20). The following soil properties were determined: microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN), microbial respiration (MR), metabolic quotient (qCO2) and microbial quotient (qMIC), total organic carbon (TOC) and nitrogen (TN). The MBC, qCO2 and carbon management index (CMI) were not altered by doses of fertilizer and biochar. The presence of biochar reduced...

Microbiological and biochemical properties of an agricultural Mexican soil amended with sewage sludge Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Armenta,Renato; Vaca,Rocio; Lugo,Jorge; del Aguila,Pedro.
The application of sewage sludge is a concern because it may affect the quality of organic matter and microbiological and biochemical soil properties. The effects of surface application of sewage sludge to an agricultural soil (at 18 and 36 t ha-1 dry basis) were assessed in one maize (Zea mays L.) growing season. The study evaluated microbial biomass, basal respiration and selected enzymatic activities (catalase, urease, acid and alkaline phosphatase, and β-glucosidase) 230 days after sewage sludge application and infrared spectroscopy was used to assess the quality of dissolved organic matter and humic acids. Sewage sludge applications increased the band intensity assigned to polysaccharides, carboxylic acids, amides and lignin groups in the soil. The...

Weed Interference in Soybean Crop Affects Soil Microbial Activity and Biomass Planta Daninha
FIALHO,C.M.T.; SILVA,A.A.; MELO,C.A.D.; COSTA,M.D.; SOUZA,M.W.R.; REIS,L.A.C..
ABSTRACT: Weeds and microorganisms interacting with their rhizosphere may influence nutrient absorption, which is an important factor for plant competition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microbiological activity, inorganic phosphorus solubilization (Pi) and acid phosphatase in the cultivated soil, in a combination of soybean (Glycine max) plants and weeds. Soybeans were cultivated in monoculture and in competition with Bidens pilosa, Brachiaria decumbens (Syn. Urochloa decumbens) and Eleusine indica, under two conditions: a) plants competing without contact between the roots b) plants competing with contact between the roots. A nylon screen with a 50 µm mesh was added to prevent contact between the roots of the species in competition so...
